Take Rt. 195 in Mansfield Center to Clovermill Road. This will be a left
hand turn. Follow this road to the gravel parking lot on the right. There is
a good sized sign telling you that this is Schoolhouse Brook Park. The
parking here is good. The lot can hold about 10 cars. You can get printout
of a trail map for this section of the park by clicking here.
Schoolhouse Brook South. This map can be very
handy on your hike.
The hike to this letterbox is about ½ mile one way. There is
uphill walking but nothing steep. The trails are mostly wide, easy to walk
and well marked. Intersections in this park have wooden signposts.
Cross the road and pass the boulders blocking the trail to vehicles.
Proceed 30 steps to a Y. Go left here and follow Barrows trail. Walk
alongside Barrows Pond’s NE shore. Come to a Y in the trail. Barrows Trail
goes over a man made dam that was reinforced by beavers. Bear left and take
the ski trail. You will come to cross a very small bridge over a small
stream coming from Barrows Pond. Keep following the white blazed trees which
mark the trail. Follow the trail uphill until you come to a four way
intersection of paths. The paths that converge here are Heritage, Barrows
and Ski Trail. Take a left here and proceed down Heritage trail. You will
come to the intersection of Heritage Trail and a ski loop. At the sign post
that says Heritage, go down Heritage Trail 88 steps. Here you should see 3
trees that have grown from 1. This tree is 9 feet off the trail on the left.
Go to this tree and take a reading of 210 degrees. Walk off trail 32 steps
to a wide bottomed tree. Go to the other side of this tree and find the
Sasquatch letterbox. Return the way you came to return to your vehicle.
In Search of Sasquatch
Sasquatch is an anglicized American Indian word meaning wild man. In the
United States, the creature is nicknamed "Big Foot". An easy way to describe
one is to call it a huge ape-man. The Sasquatch is a large, hairy, non-human
primate that walks on two feet. They are located all over the North American
continent mostly in isolated areas. The sasquatch is covered with black,
dark brown, reddish brown or gray hair. Sasquatch sleep mostly during the
day in beds made out of piles of vegetation. They eat anything that they can
find, both vegetation and meat. Usually they live in small groups of 1 male
and up to 4 females plus the young. The males’ height is about 8 feet tall
and weighs about 800 pounds. The female is smaller at about 6 feet tall and
500 pounds. They often have an unpleasant odor about them. Their head is
massive but compared to the rest of the body, it appears too small. It is
also conical on the top resembling someone wearing a hood. The brow ridge
stands out and the forehead seems to be receding which make the eyes have a
deep set look. The cheekbones are prominent and the jaw square. The nose is
somewhat flattened. The teeth are human like and the ears are basically
hidden under hair. Sasquatch walk slightly stooped over but has been known
to occasionally stand up straight. The shoulders are very wide with muscles
coming up from the back and from the neck making the neck look small or
non-existent. They also look barrel chested accentuated by huge muscles. The
arms are very muscular and are reported as hanging close to their knees,
although this looks even more pronounced because of the slouching stance.
They are particularly hairy along the forearms and end in very large and
massive hands. The legs are massive, especially the thighs. One report
describes them as the thickness of a garbage can. The feet are huge and
average about 15 ½ inches long, which well, describes why they are usually
called big foot. The feet have no arch. Sasquatch do have individual
features and look different from one another, as do humans. It is estimated
that there are between 2000 and 6000 Sasquatch living in North America.
There have been thousands and thousands of reports of people seeing a
Sasquatch but there are only a couple accounts of them attacking humans and
one report of a Sasquatch ever killing a human. The normal reaction is for
them to go away as soon as they know they have been sighted. Some cases tell
of them making noise, throwing rocks and screaming, trying to scare away the
human without attacking. There have been cases where children were
vulnerable and in all cases, they observed the children but left them alone
unharmed. Dogs are generally afraid of the Sasquatch and are left alone. The
Sasquatch will kill aggressive dogs that chase after them, or threatening
dogs. The native North American Indians have many tales about the Sadquatch
and look upon him in high esteem. Some believe that the Sasquatch has a high
degree of psychic abilities and knows when someone is looking for him. It is
said that the Iroquois believe them to be interdimensional beings that can
enter or leave our physical dimension as they please, and choose to whom
they present themselves. Others regard Sasquatch appearance as a warning to
humans that they must change their ways.
